The Pope Visit

The Pope

The Pauline tradition has been assiduously fostered in Malta since at least the early modern period. The Knights promoted it for reasons of institutional prestige whilst the Maltese considered it as proof of an ancient Christian European heritage that was even older than that of the Order.

GrandMaster's Palace

The building is a two storey edifice having five entrances and quadrangle in form occupying an area of 96 metres by 81 metres.  Originally designed and built by the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar in 1572, the Palace had been altered and extended numerous times.

Most of these modifications are not documented precisely enough, so that it is hard to judge which elements belong to the original structure and which parts were later added. Even the Palace's building history proves to be a complicated matter: Gerolamo Cassar had to integrate two existing buildings in the Palace, one of which was the first Italian auberge.

The Inquisitor was an ecclesiastic nominated directly the by Pope to protect the Catholic faith and Christian morals of the people.  He presided over a Tribunal, with the duty of observing the established rules of procedures.

The Inquisition in Malta forms part of the Roman Inquisition tribunal that started to function as a separate tribunal from the Bishop’s law courts in 1562.  It was due to the advent of Mgr. Pietro Dusina, that the Roman Inquisition tribunal became distinctly cut off from the Bishop’s jurisdiction.

Maltese bread

Crunchy Maltese Bread

The piece of Malta many miss most when abroad for long, is so good and wholesome that "If you could judge a country's wealth from its bread, Malta would have to be the richest".

Although not unique within the Mediterranean framework, the Maltese society was often controlled, if not held hostage, by the importance of the daily bread and the omnipresent fear of hunger.

The provision of an adequate supply of grain has always been a preoccupation for the administrators of the islands.  The islanders faced the imminent danger of hunger and the Islands stability was at stake, whenever the source experienced scarcity.

By the medieval period the Universita or representatives of the Maltese, negotiated treaties with Sicily for the supply of grain.  This practice was kept during the reign of the Order of St.John even though they knew that this could undermine their authority on the territory of the island.

Malta climate

The largest island in the Republic of Malta archipelago, the island of Malta spans some 27 kilometers (17 miles) from northwest to southeast. The island sits in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily. Graced with numerous bays serving as natural harbors, Malta is not only one of Europe’s smallest countries, but also one of its most densely populated.

The Advanced Land Imager on NASA’s Earth Observing-1  satellite captured this true-color image of Malta on August 12, 2009. Against the backdrop of black ocean water, Malta appears in shades of gray, beige, brown, and green. Gray cityscape stretches over much of the island, centered around the bustling port city of Valletta on the northeast coast, which hosts cruise ships, ferry boats, and yachts.
