The Malta Military Tattoo, which takes place for the seventh year on Saturday and Sunday October 10-11 at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre, in Ta’Qali. provides an atmosphere of precision marching, formation, gymnastic displays and music, which many find entertaining.
The first 4 venues of the Malta Military Tattoo that were all of great success took place at St George's Square in Valletta. Two years ago, organisers moved the event indoors, at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre, in Ta’ Qali.
Following the success of previous events and the Tattoo’s growing reputation, this year’s show promises to be the biggest ever presented and will definitely again be one of the top events in Malta for 2009. This year's tattoo will includes the Grenadiers and Rifles Military Band from The Netherlands, the Army Cadet Force Band, the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, the Swiss Pipes and Drums of Jura and the Danish Talentholdet. The local Armed Forces of Malta Band and the Malta Police Band will entertain the crowd accompanied by the Malta Police Precision Drill Team.
The origins of the military tattoo dates back to the 17th century when the British Army was fighting in the Low Countries (Belgium and The Netherlands). Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 21:30 hrs each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as doe den tap toe (Dutch for "turn off the tap"), an instruction to innkeepers to stop serving beer and send the soldiers home for the night. The beating rhythm of the drums was changed from tap toe to tattoo. Over the years, the word was kept through the generations and is now used to announce a large mass military celebration, offered as an evening entertainment.
One of the best known Tattoos is held at Edinburgh each August and forms the centrepiece of the city’s annual festival. Another leading UK Tattoo is the Birmingham Tattoo held annually at the National Indoor Arena in November. In 2008, The Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo was launched, held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The Royal International Air Tattoo is the world's largest military airshow, open to the public, while the indoor Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Canada is the largest annual indoor tattoo, featuring over 2,000 performers from around the world.
