I am traveling to Malta on July 18th and I never been there so I was wondering if someone that has been there to tell me where are the interesting places to visit. Also what do you think about the hotel we are going to stay? - Hi there, I just moved to Malta from England last month, I've been coming here for many years with my family, (im 17 by the way) and I am now living with some Maltese friends. There are a lot of beautiful places to visit in Malta, I hope you will love the character of Malta, such as the old buses and bumpy roads, and the locals are very friendly. Depending on whether you have a car or not will determine where you can go, here is a list of places that are of interest: Blue Grotto - Ghar Lapsi Valletta - Capital Mdina (Silent city) Marsaxlokk - Typical old fishing village Marsascala - for a meal in the evening Sliema - shopping! Ta' Qali - Craft village Dingli Cliffs & Wied iz-Zurrieq
If you want some more advice, or how to pronounce the places! just send me an email and i will be more than happy to provide you with information on the island, Hope you have a good holiday.
We are thinking of going to Malta with our 4 children (7, 9, 11 and 13). We are used to warm weather (as we live in Spain) and we like to do "cultural" things: castles, museums, old cities etc. Kids also love things like caves, boat trips etc. What is the best time of the year to visit the island and what is the best place to stay? What are fun things to do in Malta? Can anyone recomend a good apartment that sleeps 6? Thanks! - i have been to malta. i am 13 now, but i was 11 when i went. It was soo fun! my grandparents were from there, and they have a house there, even though they live in canada. we went with the family, and we all loved it. some suggestions i would give would be valleta which is the capital. it is a neat walled off city, which is lively in the day they have their siesta though which is at 200 pm, and gozo which is great for its beaches with trouquis water, as well as hiking, and looking at some of the caves that are in the water.. we stayed in maleja (i forget how to spell it. its pronounced meliha) which was a typical town. i would recommend it fully! we didnt stay in a hotel, because we stayed in my granparent's flat, untill they left back home. then, we rented a flat which i remember was cheap. (we stayed in rover's return flats) Have fun, and i know your kids will enjoy it. - Malta is great you can do all the stuff you wanted to do can be hot in the summer to pack sun cream we have been before and found out that most shops don't open on Sunday the supermarkets never open on Sunday because people go to church and have day of rest. - With kids, I would suggest staying in the North of the island. It is where the sandy beaches are and its not as busy and congested as the south. In the North you have Melliha Bay which is shallow but does get busy, Golden Bay which is great but also busy,Ghajn Tuffeiha which is next to Golden Bay which is not so touristy but you might have to take your own drinks or my favourite, Armier Bay which is beutiful with lovely sand, rockpools and views over Comino and Gozo (but avoid the first restaurant on the beach as it is not clean. The one in the middle is great though! the North is also good as it is easy to get across to Gozo which is more like Malta used to be before the EU got their hands on it! If you do stay in Sliema/St. Julians you are nearer places like Valletta but traffic build up means that they can be a pain to get to (wherever you are, go to Valletta on the bus as parking is a nightmare!) Buggiba is a popular tourist place but a bit down market and 'englishised'. If possible, do hire a car as although the buses are great they can be slow and some places are quite a walk from the bus stop in the heat - not to mention standing in the middle of the Maltese countryside with no shade waiting for the thing! must visit is Mdina, the fortified medieval city in the middle of the island, not only is there great architecture but the kids will be able to visit a Norman house and the Roman villa. Whilst you are there, a visit to Fontinellas is a must - great for a lunch or tea time treat - wonderful chocolate cake, lemon merangue pie etc etc as well as pastizzi and great pizzas! f you come in summer, you might go to a village festa in the weekend: in fact, in each weekend there are about 3 or 4 villages celebrating their festa of their patron saint. you might enjoy the fireworks on friday and saturday nights at midnight and on sunday night attend the procession of the saint. for children i think that the fireworks would be the best attraction though, i dont like much the sunday activities, but then, everyone has their own tastes. If you come for the easter holidays, you might want to attend the Good Friday procession and on Easter Sunday at about 9 am and 12 am you might see the traditional 'run with the statue of the Risen Christ' in various villages.
